Emotional Mix-Up of the IPL

Mar 4th, 2008 | By sandeeps | Category: Top Stories

symondsThe Indian Premier League(IPL) is in limelight for several reasons like exorbitant pay for cricketers, involvement many famous personalities(from film and industry) and of course controversies. The leagues is projected as a sort of revolution for cricket as it is expected to shake the world of cricket to its foundation. However with all these positives the league is expected to have a lot of emotional issues, particularly after so many things happened in India’s tour of Australia.

Hyderabad and Chennai franchise have hired majority of overseas ‘match winner’ players. The team looks every good on paper, but I am skeptical whether these individual players of different cultural background, emotional quotient blend together seamlessly and form a practical winning combination. Just imagine ! Indians playing with a foul mouthed Symonds, Akthar. Thank god three best friends Harbhajan, Symonds and Hayden are different teams, otherwise the team would been in big trouble. There are several other arrogant(outgoing) players who may not blend well with the team.

Andrew Symonds has been a major discussion point. According to a CNN-IBN report a fan Hyderabad team is worried about Symonds being in Deccan Chargers.

“He has been consistently insulting our players, and the fact that he is playing for Hyderabad at such a high price also adds insult to insult to injury to us”.

The article also iterates that Symonds is a very stubborn person, after all the controversies down-under many Austrlian players have tried to build bridges with Indians but Symonds never attempted to do the same.

rohit sharmaWhile hiring players also there were some emotional decisions e.g. Anil Kumble for Bangalore. A player who has retired from ODIs a year ago, never played a Twenty20 match, still has been hired by Bangalore Royal Challengers.

Now, let’s look at emotional mix-up in different context. Due to inter-city hiring many players may not be representing their hometown franchise, so both spectators and players will be in catch-22 situation. A Daily Mirror article indicates - it will take some getting used to for someone like Rohit who has been long adored in the Mumbai cricket circles and the butterflies will flutter in his stomach when he emerges from the visitors’ enclosure at Mumbai’s Stadium.

Since club culture is still new for cricket in India, and when the league progresses there will a lot emotional issues attached it. I hope all the franchises identify and handle these emotional issues at an early stage itself.

  1. Different people have different attitudes. Even, lot of regular aussies think Symmonds is high strung and should loosen up. Part of being a cricket team member that represents a country requires the knack of keeping friendly relations of the field and good rivalry on the field. Symmonds still has to master that art.
But, he is such a good player, that no body bothered to educate him on the other side of being a cricketer.
I would like to think he is a good individual and not a bad person.

He would be a tremendous asset to Hyderabad team in winning the matches. I pretty sure he will make new buddies when he starts playing in India.

  2. I agree with you Vish. It seems that what Symonds lacks in maturity, he more than makes up with his talent, and will be a true asset for the H’bad team.

  3. Aditya ,

Don’t write articles for the sake of writing them !!!
It seems like you are writing for just earning money through Adsense .

You are making Symonds look like a criminal .
You are quoting cnn-ibn reports on how a fan is disappointed by inclusion of symonds in the team.

But the fact is that majority of them are happy that Symonds is playing for Hyderabad , if you dont’ believe go through the same cnn-ibn videos .

“Thank god three best friends Harbhajan, Symonds and Hayden are different teams, otherwise the team would been in big trouble. ”

Are you a astrologer or what , you don’t even know what exactly happened between them .
They are professional players , teams would have been considered lucky if they were all playing for the same team as it would be a bonus for marketing ,other than that i don’t think there would be team management problem .

  4. Hey Charger,

We didn’t mean to make out that Symonds is a criminal. The point is that it looks like the IPL is getting more emotional than professional because of all these controversies, and we just thought its interesting to talk about!
