Sponsors paying Sony money to block out other Advertisers

Mar 9th, 2008 | By Aditya | Category: News

Sony EntertainmentThe high-stakes advertising campaigns that will be run during the 59-match IPL series just got ugly with the prime IPL sponsors paying Sony, who owns all the Television Broadcasting rights) a bunch of money (Rs 7 Crores, apparently) to prevent other advertisers from showing ads during the matches. Vodafone and Hyundai Motors and among the “official” sponsors of the tournaments, and they want Sony to block out ads from their competitors.

Whether this is ethical is debatable. On one hand, it’s a private enterprise completely, so whatever is happening seems economically sound. That is, if the sponsors are willing to shell out big money to block out competitors, its a private decision. On the other hand, an argument can be made that these folks are paying for “exclusivity”, in other words - “Creating a Monopoly”.

So what are the rival car and cell phone companies to do? The ICL looks like a good option for them!
