Turmoil at England Cricket Board

Mar 29th, 2008 | By Aditya | Category: News

ecb-logo.gifThings are not going well for the England Cricket Board (ECB) at all. It’s been hit with a series of bouncers and this may well be the beginning of the end for it. For starters, the entire England ODI team (and the test team) is in a conflict with the board for not letting them play in the IPL properly. They want the ECB to make way in the calendar for the IPL from next year. But the disgruntled players are just the beginning.

Shane Warne yesterday announced his “retirement” from first class cricket - He used to play for Hampshire - to concentrate on the IPL. Warne is the big boss of the Jaipur team, and is likely to play in ALL the matches, so he’s seeing a big packet of money heading his way. There are lots of rumors that a lot of other international players will start resigning if the ECB doesn’t do something about the IPL and ICL leagues.

The BCCI, on its part, in a somewhat half-hearted attempt to calm down the fire has offered an olive branch to the ECB. The BCCI has apparently offered to play an IPL exhibition match in England. Many are seeing this as  a sign of indignation, a sort of “big-money-bags BCCI handing left over fish to the British”. After the recent news that the Tatas have bought out the iconic British brands Jaguar and Land Rover,  the British must really be feeling the pressure of “those big-money Indians”.

What a reversal!
