IPL competiton for TV Soaps?

The EconomicTimes always has interesting stuff to read, and today they’re reporting on a very interesting story that TV Soap Operas are actually going to be in trouble when the IPL matches begin. It’s an interesting phenomenon, something I doubt SONY and the other TV channels thought about.
For starters, the IPL may be cannabalizing some of SONY’s own Soap operas, but that’s less of a problem for SONY than it is for Star TV which has the most number of K-soaps. The timings of these are perfect too - 6-9 PM is peak time for soap operas, and that’s exactly when the IPL matches are going to be held.
Perhaps the most interesting thing is that a large part of the potentinal IPL audience is housewives and young adults, who, incedentally, are also the target audience for soap operas! Looks like another battle is about to get heated up on TV. But you know what’d be really cool? If they played IPL matches WWE style, with soap-opera type twists and turns. That’ll be a super-duper-hit, I think ![]()
