IPL faces media boycott
Apr 12th, 2008 | By Aditya | Category: News
We earlier talked about how the stupid media restrictions that the BCCI has imposed on the coverage of the IPL matches has the media, especially the online editions all angry. Things have gotten worse since then, with the BCCI now facing a near-certain boycott of the IPL by the international media and even India’s own PTI.
The Editors of the newspapers are really up against it this time, with the Hindu, in an editorial reporting “Greed and arrogance and a total lack of common sense seem to be driving the IPL along a path of confrontation, which will surely bring on a media boycott.” Now, the BCCI undeniably needs the media to help it drive ticket and merchandise sales, but is the BCCI willing to risk alienating newspapers and online sites like rediff and cricinfo and rely just on SONY? Or will they back down? We’ll know soon, because the first IPL match kicks off next week!
