Royal Challengers Sink Deeper

May 10th, 2008 | By pazz | Category: Top Stories

The misery just does not stop for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Vijay Mallya owned, Bangalore side slumped to their sixth straight defeat in the IPL in a rain-curtailed affair against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens.

Winning the toss Saurav Ganguly, captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders made, what appears to be in hindsight the correct decision, by electing to bat. The Knight Riders made a competitive total of 129, which was by no means impossible. But once again the Royal Challengers compounded their own troubles with their slow batting in the first 5 overs.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, (as we feared in Colour me Skeptic) has failed to get a move on throughout this tournament. J Arunkumar tonked the ball around for a bit in his 17 ball 22, which was very slow in the context of a rain-curtailed affair. Rahul Dravid once again failed to kick-start his innings and tried to Saurav Ganguly to fine leg with a premeditated paddle sweep but instead lost his leg stump!

Cameron White and Mark Boucher tried to get their team back into the match with a 45 run partnership but when White was dismissed in an unfortunate run-out it meant that the Royal Challengers could only attack from one end. Mark Boucher (who remained unbeaten on 50), almost took the game away from the home-side but in the end Bangalore fell 5 runs short of their target.

Bangalore is almost out of the IPL, unless they manage to win ALL their next 6 matches

Earlier Saurav Ganguly and David Hussey top-scored for the Knight Riders with 20 and 26 respectively. Saurav’s impressive overall performance in the end won him the Man of the Match award and ended the Knight Riders’ 4 match losing streak.

Bangalore now seems almost certainly out of the IPL, unless they manage to win the next 6 matches! It will be interesting to see whom Vijay Mallya fires next if the victory drought does not end. As far as the Knight Riders it’s party time as Korbo and Lorbo finally resulted in Jeetbo
