Mallya Speaks Out Against Dravid!

May 13th, 2008 | By Aditya | Category: Top Stories

The dismal performance of the Bangalore Royal Challengers continues unabated, they’ve lost yet another match against the Mohali team. That puts them right at the bottom of the league table, and out of the semi-finals.

What a disaster this has been for the Bangalore Royal Challengers. And in typical outspoken fashion, Mallya came out against Dravid, blaming him squarely for the bad performance of the team. There is no doubt that Rahul Dravid has failed as a captain, but Mallya’s style of criticizing sounds more like bitchin’ than an attempt to solve problems.

Mallya apparently kept out of the selection process of the team because he fully trusted Dravid and (ex-CEO) Charu Sharma to pick the team, and Dravid failed him. Everyone knew, even before the tournament began, that the Bangalore team looked more Test team, and less T20 team, and Mallya now claims that he knew about this, but went ahead with it anyway, because he trusted Dravid.

I call bullshit. A part of the blame for the selection of the bad team rests on Mallya too. He was there when the auctions happened, and he saw what team was being picked. Why didn’t he speak up then, if he knew it was a test team? The problem is that Mallya didn’t do his homework, and thought that just putting money into the team will magically double his money in five years.

That’s not how it works, mate. Look at the league tables. The teams that are working are the teams whose owners did the homework, picked out a good combination of players, balancing strengths and weaknesses. The heres-the-money-now-get-me-a-victory approach of Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad has produced disastrous results. For God’s sake, Preity Zinta knew enough to have picked out a better team than Mallya, who, by the way, also runs a Formula-1 team.

And now, the strategy that Mallya is using is only going to dig him deeper into the hole. He’s out in the media, publically bitchin’ about Dravid, he fired the CEO, Charu Sharma, who, by the way, is really pissed and issues regular statements against Mallya. All this talk later, there is no sign or attempt to fix things up. Mallya says that this is a corporate franchise, and that people are going to be held responsible. That’s a euphimism for “more people are going to get fired”. That is a dumb strategy in my opinion. Threatening to fire a a team that’s already low on morale. What’s Mallya going to get by talking like this? If anything, it’ll only accelerate the teams fall into the depths of crap.

Mallya is not going to make any friends by trying to put the blame on Dravid. Dravid is undoubtedly responsible ultimately for the bad performance of the team, but a large part of it also goes to Mallya and his attitute towards cricket.

  1. Mallya cannot be blamed for his public utterances against Dravid.he is just living to his reputation.
Mallya says that he was asked by Dravid whether he wants a glamorous team or a winning one and he opted for the later. If this is true then Dravid is responsible and he owes a answer to Mallya.
The best thing Mallya can for his team is that he should stop making his comments public.
the results portray a very grim future for his team but if we stop and take stock of the situation it is not a bad team at all.Players like Dravid,Kallis,Boucher,Misbah and not to fogret the under 19 world cup winning captain Viraat Kohli.
This team needs a foreign coach and the differnce would be for every one to see.I do not expect Venkatesh Prasad to teach the tricks of the game to the likes of Rahul,Boucher and Kallis.
They lost a very close encounters which did not help their cause and if i am not wrong this Bangalore side is lot better than the chennai side without Hussey and Hayden.
They say that the captain should lead from teh front which Dravid is doing. He is scoring in every match but he is not getting any support from the other end..
As SRK says that lets go out in a flas rather than a wimper.
hope bangalore wins the remaining matches and do us proud.I am putting my money on this side to come back very strongly.
